The PhD School and FIRE – Research Group for Fiscal Relations, University of Copenhagen, in collaboration with the University of Lund and the University of Southern Denmark hereby invite all PhD students within the discipline of jurisprudence to a course on
Methods and methodology in tax law related areas.
The purpose of the course is to focus on various methods and methodologies specifically relevant for PhD students doing research within the area of direct or indirect tax law. Obviously the course is relevant for core tax law PhD projects, but the course is equally relevant for PhD projects which partly include tax law related matters.
The course will be divided into four different group sessions chaired by four different facilitators as the group sessions will focus on the following topics:
- Professor Rasmus Kristian Feldthusen: Tax policy, morality and ethics/Corporate Social Responsibility and the rule of law/protection of taxpayers’ rights
- Associate Professor Maria Hilling: The Use of Non-Traditional Legal Sources (e.g. interpretation of OECD documents)
- Postdoc Frank Høgholm Pedersen: Sociology of law, multidisciplinary research, taxpayers’ attitudes and tax avoidance, tax complexity, assessment of compliance and psychological cost
- Assistant Professor Karina Kim Egholm Elgaard: Legal polycentricity, interaction between different areas of law and comparative tax law.
The facilitators will give a short introduction to their topics and then facilitate the discussions in plenum of the PhD projects relevant to the topics covered in their group session.
In order to allocate the PhD projects between the group sessions the PhD students are required to write a project description of 2 pages in which they explain their project and at the same time address those of the topics mentioned above that are most relevant for their project.
On 21 June 2017 FIRE hosts a whole-day-conference “Tax Research of the Year” where academics, practitioners and students are invited to present their latest research. The attending PhD students at the course are invited to submit a paper of 10-15 pages on their research and to present this at the conference. However, please note that it may not be possible for all PhD students submitting a paper to present as preference will be given to published research and PhD projects at a later stage. The submission of a paper without presentation would still qualify for 3,5 ECTS.
